East of Eden - Chapters 9-11

Chapter 9- Sexual Attraction Towards Cathy

Cathy hears about Mr. Edwards, a man who runs inns housing prostitutes, so she goes there to look for a job. Mr. Edwards, who is skeptical and distance to all his employees, is surprised to feel a powerful sexual attraction to Cathy; so he decides to keep Cathy for himself and gets her a small place. Cathy manipulates Mr. Edward into getting her expensive gifts in addition she steals from him. After some time, Mr. Edwards starts to know more about Cathy’s background and out of anger; one night he forces her to come with him to a remote area and then beats her severely. Cathy is left bloodied in a field near the Trask farm in Connecticut.

Chapter 10 - Dispute’s Same Routine

Charles and Adam start to get sick of each other on the farm. They fight constantly, as Adam hates Charles’s routine to waking up at 4:30 every morning to work the farm , while Charles cannot stand Adam’s criticism and laziness. Adam tries to talk Charles into going to California since they are rich , but Charles has no interest in leaving the farm. Adam begins to leave on trips for longer and longer periods of time after fighting with his brother. But one day when Adam returns from Buenos Aires, and tells Charles the story of his months on the chain gang after the war, which changes Charles perspective on Adam and because of this he has more respect toward Adam.

Chapter 11 - Charles’ Sense of Danger

Adam and Charles find the Cathy severely injured on their back steps, Adam's tender nature emerges and he falls in love but Charles worries about their reputation and insists that Cathy leaves. A doctor, good friends with Cyrus, comes to repair her injuries that following night. When the sheriff questions her about the beating, she feigns to have forgotten. Charles is not fooled, and confronts her one day to tell her he does not trust her and now she is lying, this scares Cathy who...
