Parental neglect is one topic which has been argued on for a while now. It is true that due to ‘nuclear family” creation and career-oriented parents, neglects of kids is ever increasing. Parents are not able to give as much time to their kids as they should. This has been pointed out in Ms. Malkin’s article where she is trying to convince readers to rethink their position and take actions before it is too late. Ms. Malkin’s article is certainly an attention grabber but is it convincing? Yes, to some extent it is. The article is certainly thought provoking.

She is claiming that besides social pressures and low self-esteem, absence of parents is a major cause for teenagers being captivated by internet. She has supported this claim by using Katie’s story as a justification. What happened to Katie was ugly and in her case parental neglect was a major reason for her increasing friendship with Mark but the writer cannot base her position on one incident. There are other teenagers like Katie who fall prey to cyber crimes but not necessarily out of loneliness. Also it should be noted that the writer has convinced readers somewhat to her claim although I have some hesitation steel.

Moving on I agree that parental neglect is a strong point but what about other minor points like peer pressure, surroundings of the teenager, self-image and adolescents meaning the changes that are occurring both mentally and physically? Aren’t they important? What about those teenagers who get love and attention from parents? Don’t they use internet and become prey of cyber crimes? Is it right to blame only parents? There are cases where love and care from parents couldn’t save teenagers from being assaulted. I agree that it is the parents’ duty to look out for their children but can they do it always? Nowadays kids in order to look cool or be cool do stuff which are not acceptable. They do it to impress their peers, to be a part of a group and not because they are necessarily neglected. The...
