CHARLES’ LAW

Introduction

The purpose of this lab was to determine the effect of temperature on the volume of gas when the pressure is constant and to prove that Charles’s Law actually works.

Charles' law summarizes the quantitative relationship between the volume and the absolute temperature of a gas. The law states that at constant pressure, the volume of a particular sample of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature.

The data from the experiment reveals that as temperature increases, so does volume. As temperature decreases, the volume also decreases. This validates the fact that there is in fact direct relationship between temperature and the volume of gas.

Procedure

Select the Gas Syringe Sealed from the Equipment menu

Set Syringe volume to 20ML

Put Thermometer in syringe

Trial A:

Record the volume and temperature

Trial B:

From the Equipment menu, select a 250 ml beaker.

Right-click on the beaker, and select Distilled Water. Add 200 ml of ice water (-20° Celsius).

Right-click on the beaker, and add Thermometer.

Select the syringe and place it in the beaker. Select the syringe and beaker.

Allow for the temperature in the syringe to reach the same temperature as the ice water bath Record the volume and temperature.

Trial C:

Remove the syringe from the water bath

Empty the beaker

Add Thermometer.

Add 100 ml of ice water (-20° Celsius).

Add 100 ml of room temperature water (20° Celsius) by selecting final volume level of 200 ml.

Record the temperature.

Select the syringe, and place it in the beaker. Select the syringe and beaker.

Allow for the temperature in the syringe to reach the same temperature as the water in the beaker.

Record the volume and temperature.

Trial D:

Remove the syringe from the waterEmpty the beaker by right-clicking on it and selecting Empty.

Add Thermometer.

Add 100 ml of room temperature water (20° Celsius).

Place the Bunsen burner beneath the beaker of water.
