Ballet and Kabuki are two “classical” forms of interesting dances that may seem very different. Ballet represents a type of European dance, whereas Kabuki is Japanese dance. Although they have many similarities, to better understand them, we should, at first, view them separately.

Kabuki was created by Okumi in Japan in the early 17th century and it has 400-year history. At first, there were only female actresses, but soon they were banned from performing and it was only men. Kabuki expresses feelings and states stories. It requires a lot of energy. In Kabuki, the actors use many in their performances. They are gesture, dialogue, movement, and other dancing elements.

Ballet is also 400-year-old. The first ballet was performed by the Ballet Comique de la Reine in Paris, in 1581. After the birth of ballet, it has become the major performing art. In 1661, Louis XIV founded the first ballet academy, since then, there have been hundreds of ballet academies around the world. Ballet is an expression of the human body. It is often fairy tales with a meaning in the end.

One of the biggest differences between Ballet and Kabuki would be how they are passed down. For Kabuki, it was passed down in families and was taught to the son by his father. If there was no one to carry it on, then the family will adopt someone to carry it on. The sons start early, by the age of five, they will begin to learn the gestures and movements. By the age eight, they will have memorized the whole stories. Unlike ballet, in Kabuki, the older the actor is, the better his performance will be. For ballet, people start it at a very early age and work up to being a great performer. For most times, it is taught by the professional ballet instructors. There are professional ballet academies.
