Applying Ethics in Practice

Becoming a human service professional doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of learning about ethics to how to help clients to even filling out the paperwork correctly. But even with all the teachings and hours of volunteering you do, when facing the problems yourself like your mentor, a whole set of issues can come your way, some intention and some not so intentional. In this short essay I will discuss a situation where I feel my personal values can become an ethical issue and how I will overcome it.

One topic that is very touchy for me is abortion. My religious views says that it’s a sin, my family’s beliefs and values is that it’s a sin, and for myself and my personal values and beliefs believes that it’s a sin. Even thinking about it for me is so foreign because I’m pro-life. But I will only understand abortion if it’s a danger to your health or if you were sexually assaulted. Outside of that, I think it’s wrong because how I view it is like consequences. If you do good things, good things happen back to you. If you do bad things, you get a bad outcome. For example, if you commit a felony, you know you will go to jail and serve time. So when you decided to have unprotected sex and got pregnant, you need to face it. There hasn’t been one thing in my life where I haven’t owned up to what I did and made things right, why allow it now.

That is just my general view on it. There is adoption and I’m for that but instead of “ridding” yourself of this child, grace a family with the child you created. There are many families out there who dreams of becoming parents and if you’re not ready, there is that option.

How I plan to overcome this using the transcultural integrative model. This is probably the best model for me to use as it seeks the balance from the cultures and beliefs and discussing it. Though I would make it a point not to impose my beliefs and values on such clients, but it...
