1. Based on the information presented in this week’s “Introduction to Teaching and Learning” video program and your course text reading, how would you characterize the relationship between teaching and learning? In what ways does this relationship encourage you to teach differently than the way you were taught in the past?

Teaching and learning go hand in hand. One should not happen without the other. According to the text, it is instruction based on principles of learning that maximizes learning for all students (Kauchak & Eggen, 2008). Teachers can’t cause someone to learn. They have to create conditions for learning to take place. The characteristics of teachers have a great deal to do with whether a student can learn. Factors that define effectiveness for teaching and learning are belief system, knowledge, problem solving skills and strategies, and goals and interest (Laureate, Inc. 2007).

The education process is what binds teaching and learning together. Various teaching strategies provide students with different methods in which to learn. In the past, teachers taught the way they were taught because it was what they knew and because it seemed to work. They lectured more with little participation from students. Because of the teaching and learning relationship, I would teach in a way that encourages collaboration among me and my students. I would be more responsive to my students needs and more concerned about how well they are prepared for the future. Finally, with the world becoming more technologically advanced, I would integrate technology into the learning experience.
