1. Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in Great Britain?

* It began in Great Britain because of the explosion in technological advances in engineering and in work labor and machines.

* It also began due to the population increase, the surplus in labor, and lower food prices that enabled Brits to purchase more goods besides food.

2. Discuss and trace the role of the factory in the early Industrial Revolution. What made the factory system possible? What impact did it have on the lives of workers, especially on women and children?

* The role of factory in the early Industrial Revolution began with the building of mills and factories along rivers since many used rivers as power.

* Many people moved in to places that were homes to workers and had fixed times for labor.

* The factory system was made possible by the organization of the factory and the trade that was going on.

* The impact was that it led for many workers to live and work in horrible conditions, as well as good ones. They earned more money (except children and women) and had more purchasing power.

* Women and children made a significant part of the labor but were more restricted and were paid less.

3. Compare and contrast the patters of industrial revolution in continental Europe and the United States with those of Great Britain.

* The patterns of industrial revolution in continental Europe were different in that the technology was far less developed than that of England. It developed but slowly and there were few people who improved them until English came to the continental lands and designed and built them. This led to further trade and development but it was still smaller than England. Many people also lacked the business view of trade since most of continental Europe has family businesses.
