The following is general information and may be subject to changes. A full schedule with details of weekly classes and required books will be available before the beginning of the semester.

Course Description

In this class we will read examples of fiction, including short stories in the first half of the semester, and one novel in the second half. Students should understand that they will be expected to read and analyze texts both in class and for homework. The course will be designed to promote critical thinking and discussion, so as well as being prepared to read, students should also be prepared each week to discuss their ideas both in groups and with the whole class – participation will be scored and will count toward the final grade. There will be short lectures on the texts read and on fiction in general.

Course Aims and Objectives

This course is designed to encourage critical thinking and a deeper understanding of fictional texts through close reading, comprehension and interpretation exercises, and discussion. Students will also listen to lectures and turn in one final paper on the required novel. For those who attend conscientiously, the class will help to develop reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, as well as critical thinking ability. A more in-depth understanding of fiction leads to much greater enjoyment or reading, and this class aims to lay the foundations for students’ future engagement with literature in English, and build confidence in essential communication skills.
