Oceanography and Its Complications

Oceanography

First let me start off by telling you that Oceanography is the branch of Earth science that 

studies the ocean. Now for there to be a study of the ocean we need people that are trained in the 

field known as Oceanographers. What is an Oceanographer and what do they do? Well, 

Oceanography covers a wide range of topics, including marine life and ecosystems, ocean 

circulation, plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor, and the chemical and physical 

properties of the ocean. 

There are different types of Oceanographers, Biological oceanographers and Marine 

Biologists study plants and animals in the marine environment, Chemical oceanographers and 

marine chemists study the composition of seawater, its processes and cycles, and the chemical 

interaction of my seawater with the atmosphere and seafloor, Geological oceanographers and 

marine geologists explore the ocean floor and the processes that form its mountains, canyons, I 

and valleys, and Physical oceanographers study the physical conditions and physical processes 

within the ocean such as waves, currents, etc. 

Now that we have gone through the basics let’s get into the more interesting parts of 

Oceanography. Looking at our Earth from space, it’s obvious that we live on a water planet. The 

ocean is a big part of earth for those who don’t know. Ocean covers over 70% of the Earth's 

surface and contains about 97% of the Earth's surface water.

As a growing global population stresses the ability of our society to produce food, water 

and shelter, we will continue to look to the oceans to help sustain our basic needs. Advances in 

technology, will improve our ability to derive food, drinking water, energy sources, waste 

disposal and transportation from the ocean. It will be up to this and future generations to build on 

our existing knowledge of the ocean and its potential to help meet the needs of the world and its 

people....
