Heartland Payment Systems – Organizational Culture

Heartland Payment Systems is one of the one thousand largest companies in America that provides debit, prepaid and credit card processing among other services for small to mid-sized merchants and enterprises. Heartland was founded in 1997 by Robert O. Carr and is headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey. The Jeffersonville, Indiana location where I am employed is the largest Heartland Payment Systems office in the United States. Heartland Payment Systems provides payment processing for more than 275,000 business locations in the United States and processes more than 11 million transactions a day and more than $80 billion in transactions a year. Heartland is ranked the 6th largest payment processor in the country by transaction volume, the 8th largest by transaction dollar value and 9th in the world. Being one of the world’s largest credit card processors, Heartland Payment Systems obviously deals with numerous organizational culture issues. Obviously culture issues aren’t always negative, these are just situations that human resources needs to be aware of.

Corporate culture is one of the most important factors in long-term, sustainable success. It is extremely important that an organization’s human resource department manages the corporate culture in a way that involves an exciting and diverse group of employees. It’s not good enough to have world-class products and a healthy bank balance. When HR is able to manage and offer a vibrant corporate culture, that organization can attract top talent and retain that talent. When these people go out to represent Heartland and its products to the rest of the world, they take with them the company values. Culture is built from the top down and it lies within our human resource department to maintain it and continue to make sure the company culture is always expanding.
