12 Angry Men

Introduction

12 Angry Men was a film released in 1957. It details a fictional event where 1 out of 12 jurors in a murder trial slowly convince the others that there is space for reasonable doubt in the evidence presented in court.

The movie contained valuable examples of how a group is formed and how it functions. It showed multiple instances of conflicts with in a group and how it was resolved. It also portrayed different roles for each member and how each members dimension can affect the group.

The biggest aspect in our studies that was portrayed in this movie is the obstacles to understand others. It was portrayed multiple times but was slowly addressed and eventually was abolished and a general consensus was reached.

Conflict-Resolution Styles:

”There are five traditional conflict styles: avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise and collaboration” (Engleberg 176). These styles are used by different people depending on how involved they are on either their own goals or the group’s goals.

* Avoidance Conflict: Members who utilize this style are mostly not interested in achieving any goals. They would particularly avoid conflict using any method at their disposal. They could suddenly change the subject once they notice the slightest hint of conflict, they could also excuse themselves when tension starts rising. These members are usually the “leave me alone” type (Engleberg 179).

* This style was demonstrated by the 12th juror when he was doodling on a piece of paper when tension was starting to rise after the initial voting process. Just when other members of the group started arguing, he retreated into his own brain and ignored everything that was happening around him and started doing something not related to the proceeding at hand.

* This was also demonstrated by the 12th and the 3rd juror by playing tic-tac-toe while the 8th juror was discussing something that could raise tension once again....
