WATER

MURRAY DARLING BASIN:

It is in south east Australia. Nearly 1 million square km. those are two of the longest rivers in Australia. In Australia water is unfairly distributed (a dry country). Austalia is slip into 6 states. Northern Territory is not considered as a territory, not a state (the difference is that a state self-governs itself). Historically those states were established by different colonies.

Commonwealth: the Northern Territory belongs to Canberra.

Canberra (=ACT: Australian Capital Territory???): half way through Sidney & Melbourne. Both Sydney & Melbourne wanted to be capital, Canberra was chosen as capital: cuz it was half way through Sidney & Melbourne.

Historically speaking all of the states were set as (criminal origins of Australia). Australia has the particularity to be a continent as the same time as a country (its huge).

New South Wales:

40% of Australian farms are located in New South Wales = the rest of the continent is too dry! & ¾ of the irrigation. 1/3 of the food in Australia comes from there. 2million people live there (= 1/5 of Paris population)

Within the basin, most water is concentrated in the southwest! (there are mountains). The territory is flat; therefore the rivers go quite slowly.

The problem in Australia is droughts (and when it rains there are floods ! cuz the land gets hard due to droughts ! and when it rains the water stagnate, water cannot get through the surface).

The Australian land doesn’t get moisture (=humidity).

FERGHANA VALLEY

Located in central Asia ! Surrounded by 4 ‘stans (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kirghizstan, Turkmenistan).

The Kazakhs, the Uzbeks, the Tajiks, the Kirghizs..

Syr-Daria; Aral Sea
