Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine and review the effectiveness of how the federal government and other emergency preparedness entities respond to natural disasters and catastrophic events that are frequently occurring throughout the United States. This paper will also examine the system’s lines of communication and the role of the federal, state, and local government, the military, temporary housing/shelter assistance, private and public organizations, the criminal justice system, public health department, volunteers, and foreign organizations that are called upon in the event of a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina. The focus will be on what lessons were learned and how prepared or unprepared are the emergency preparedness systems and the people who man them.
