Concert Review

For this concert review I chose to attend the Butler University Percussion Ensemble. This even took place on Tuesday October 29th at the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts. The concert featured the Butler students that are in the Jordan College of the Arts School of Music. I chose this concert for many reasons. One reason I chose to attend this particular concert was because it was strictly percussion instruments. I have never attended an ensemble in which the instruments were strictly part of the percussion family, so I thought this concert would be a fantastic choice. I also attended this particular concert because I’ve heard the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts is an amazing place to see a concert so I found this concert to be perfect for the occasion. I also knew of a fellow classmate that was going to be part of this percussion ensemble so I thought it would be a great idea to come out and support him.

There were a great number of instruments used throughout this concert. Considering it was a percussion ensemble, it was amazing how many instruments could be used in a single musical piece. Some of the main instruments I saw and heard were the timpani, xylophone, cymbals, triangle, snare drum, bass drum, maracas, gong, steel drum, marimba, and vibraphone. I would say that the xylophone was used most often as they had about 5 or 6 of them on stage. Out of all the instruments I heard, I found the steel drum to be the most pleasant sounding instrument used in the concert because it reminded me of the song Under the Sea that was used in the Little Mermaid. I also found it interesting how they incorporated the triangles in the ensemble. They used 3 or 4 at a time, and I was surprised on how easy it was to pick out the sound of the triangle with all the instruments playing at the same time.
