Organizational Structure Paper

Organizational structure refers to the way that an organization arranges people and jobs so that its work can be performed and its goals can be met (Distelzweig & Droege, n.d, para. 1). Most structures are based on functions, mission, values and objectives so they can be configured in various ways. The multiple options to blueprint organizations share the foundations of the traditional pyramidal structures where “top managers set an overall direction formulating strategy and controlling resources; middle level managers are responsible for translating those goals and plans into strategic goals while frontline managers supervise the operation of the organization” (Bateman-Snell, 2009, p 16).

This type of organization built itself as a firm chain of command that holds the stability and control risk trough regulations and norms. It favors a vertical structure of power, accountability and responsibility and it can be reliable for small business if delegation and communication are held on best regards. More than develop new products or develop adaptability to changes, this type of structures retain restrictions over production, sales and span of control.

Other organizational structures are arranged based on job categorization according to their business function. The horizontal structure grants status quo by department functions and not by individual empowerment. It is characterized by the decentralization of responsibilities and places emphasis on goals achievement trough delegation. The divisional or group units revolve around products, customers and specific tasks.
