a. Explain the function and necessity for filters on the Internet.

Web filters are important to both home users and the office environment. For home users to protect their children from visiting sites that have pornography, illegal music downloads, and child predators. They provide protection morally and also legally. Legally because illegal music and movie downloads can come with stiff fines, and many companies will sue.

For the workplace they can help filter out websites that decrease productivity and are morally wrong. Sites can offend coworkers and also cause workers to be very unproductive. Filters are a must in today’s workplace.

b. What are the three basic functions of an operating system?

There are three basic functions of an operating system. According to O’Leary and O’Leary (2008) they are managing resources, providing user interface, and running applications.

c. What are some of the common features that several operating systems have?

There are several operating systems out there. The most common operating system is Microsoft windows, however there are others such as linux and mac OS. All of these operating systems have common features. According to O’leary and O’leary (2008) they are: Icons, pointer, windows, menus, dialog boxes, and help. All of these features help the user manage data, systems, and applications.

d. Describe the three categories of operating systems.

There are three types of operating systems. They are embedded operating systems, network operating systems, and sand alone operating systems.

Acording to O’leary and Oleary (2008) “embedded operating systems are used for handheld computers and smaller devices like PDA’s” (pg. 124). Embedded operating systems have become a part of everyday life, most people now have some kind of PDA, usually their phone.
