This project provided a positive way to work with classmates that I had not previously met with to discuss the theories we have gone over in class and how they relate to work. I did research on my own to search for articles that related to women in the workplace before meeting with my group. While doing this research, I was exposed to a wide variety of opinions and situations that women in the workplace have faced. For example, many people still feel women should stay at home and assume the traditional role, while many others are outraged at unequal wages. This opened my eyes to the oppression that commonly goes unknown even in today’s society. Once we met, an article that I had not previously seen was chosen for our project. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages that women have in the US work environment. We had three males and three females in our group so there was a diversity of perspectives. Discussion in the group as opposed to class discussion was much easier since there were only six of us so we each were able to express our opinions and contribute. After we met, I worked on the PowerPoint alone to add aesthetics and finish the project. While doing this, I saw many cartoons mocking women in the workplace. However, I also saw many advertisements for women to take power and step up in the workplace. I hope that someday these opposing opinions will come to be dominated by the latter and women will be given more respect and not judged based on their gender. This project gave me a deeper understanding of the crisis our country is facing with how far we are falling behind in feminist progress. Without working on this group project, the opinions of my classmate’s would be unknown to me and I would not have such a wide perspective on the oppression of women in the workplace.
