Noise hazard identification, assessment, evaluation and implementation measures

Introduction.

According to MacMilan & Gunn (2000) compliance with the noise aspects of occupational health and safety legislation is very low in the music entertainment industry. Axelsson (1991) suggests that this low level of compliance is also reflected in the function/food service industries. In their 2008 submission to the Society of American Safety Engineers, Turrentine & Lawrence have shown that in studies of over 200 bars, function and reception areas, the average TWA is 88.9dBA which is higher than the 85 dBA that is identified in the Occupational Safety & Health Regulations 1996, regulation 3.45 as the acceptable maximum exposure standard for noise exposure. policy states the TWA for maximum noise exposure should be below 80dB(A).

Following the submission of several hazard forms over the last 12-18 months a noise hazard identification, risk assessment and evaluation will be undertaken to ascertain the level of risk, outline possible hazard exposure outcomes and identify relevant implementation measures to control the hazard. The W.A. Occupational Safety & Health Regulations states that the exposure standard for noise is 85 dB(A) to this end, Trade winds Hotel, in keeping with policy number 221 will strive to provide a workplace noise level of 80 dB(A) TWA 8 hours.

This issue is regarded with the utmost seriousness and it is worthwhile to note that noise-induced hearing loss cannot be reversed or cured.

Method.

To identify and assess the noise hazard at the, an initial walkthrough was conducted, followed by staff interviews, OSH committee meeting, hazard register review and noise level monitoring (using individual staff dosimeters and fixed monitoring equipment) as suggested in W.A. COP Noise Workplace section 4 and required in regulation 3.1 of the OSH regs 1996. Formal noise assessment will be undertaken utilising equipment supplied and operated by a...
