Mr. Jordan,
It is my understanding that you want to gain some weight this season in order to become a top college prospect. It is my job as your nutritionist to ensure that you are putting all the right things into your body to make that happen. During the next year, we are going to transform your body into a basketball machine. As we start to monitor your eating habits, and change them for the better, you will start to notice that you will get more out of your workouts and practices. You will be able to last longer, run faster, drive harder and breathe easier as every part of your body begins to work for you as it was meant to. If you give me everything you have, you will be the Next Big Thing.
I know most of you high school kids think that you have to spend loads of money on expensive supplements to get in shape and gain weight. That is the furthest thing from the truth. For the most part, there is not anything in those protein powders that you cannot get from eating a balanced diet and a simple multivitamin. My job is to show you how to do that.
The first thing that we are going to do is figure out how many calories you need to eat in a day just to maintain your current body weight. Being a pretty big guy, you are going to need to eat more than the average guys that you go to school with. While your smaller friends might only have to eat about 2,000 calories a day, if you were to eat like that you would be dropping pounds like crazy. Just to maintain your current weight, you would need to eat about 4,500 calories a day. In order to reach your goal of a 25-35 pound gain this year, I have calculated that you are going to need to eat about 5,100 calories each day (Clark, 2008, pp. 270-271). At first, this is going to seem like a lot of food, but once you get used to it, you will feel fine. Try not to worry about how much or how little the other kids are eating.
