Gait Analysis and Observation of Human Movement

• Come dressed and prepared for activity (walking or jogging). To facilitate the gait analyses

please wear shorts or pants that can be rolled up to expose the ankle

Introduction: Walking is one of the most common types of physical activity that a human

engages in during their lifetime. The walking gait is often learned very early in life. Each person

will have adapted his/her gait in response to joint alignment, muscle function, etc. The gait a

person has will sometimes predispose him/her to lower extremity or back injuries during overuse

situations.

Force plates, EMG, and digitized video can provide quantitative analysis of gait and highlight the

potential site or source of injury. Therapists and coaches who do not have access to equipment or

video use qualitative analysis to assess movement.

Purpose: The purpose of this discussion is to learn some of the qualitative techniques available

for conducting a gait analysis without electronic equipment.

Exercise I: Gait Analysis:

1. Mark a 20 ft. area start to finish with cones. See Figure 1.

2. Students should work in groups of 3-4.

a. You only have to record your data and 1 other member.

3. Students will perform 2 trials of the following (4) conditions:

a. Normal Head and Eyes forward.

b. Normal Head forward Eyes closed

c. Normal Head rotating side to side Eyes open

d. Walking on toes Head forward

4. The student walking will start with feet behind the cone. The timer will start the

clock once their partner starts to walk. The timer will finish when they have

crossed the finish cone.

5. Another student will count how many steps the student takes.

6. Record your time in seconds in Table 1.
