Current Trends in Business Communications
Communication in the workplace is vital and is an action practiced daily. Without communication one would not know how to perform his or her job, help customers resolve problems, or managers resolve conflict.
The most common form of communication in the workplace today is e-mail. Virtually all employers use this technology to communicate with coworkers as well as customers. E-mail at work is used to communicate information such as visitor notifications, changes in policy and procedures, employee achievements, or even employee birthdays. External e-mails may provide information to customers or suppliers regarding information such as account status, shipping information, or special company announcements.
Other forms of internal communication are visual such as policy and procedures, when an individual begins employment with a new company often times he or she is given a handbook that contains this information. He or she is obtaining important information about the company’s operating standards in a nonverbal manner. Also common practice in today’s workplace with the technology available is an employee’s ability to provide information nonverbally regarding benefits, tax information, and even address information. Gone are the days when one had to pick up the phone and speak to an individual in human resources to make necessary changes to his or her employment records.
However, the ability to communicate effectively is still essential in the workplace today. The ability to communicate effectively is valuable and ensures career growth. Most employers consider above average communication skills to be an asset for the company. Communicating well also helps him or her build rapport with coworkers, customers, or stakeholders.
