“Greed is good”. One of the most famous phrases that diachronically rises a great deal of debate. Many people maintain that greed can have a positive meaning whilst opponents claim that it leads to various excessive circumstances which can provoke numerous adverse situations for an individual or a society as a whole. But, what actually is greed? From the religious aspect, greed is cited as one of the Seven Deadly Sins as it is considered to be a sin of excess, an evil which is the main reason for stealing, hoarding, plundering and treason. Greedy is someone who is addicted to acquiring as much material wealth as he can in order to satisfy his desire of wanting and expecting more. Additionally, greed is a way of satisfying one’s selfishness but however, it can be good in some circumstances. For example, greed can motivate people to pose higher goals and consequently to work hard in order to succeed. This can be done by having a good education and taking chances in order to set up their own business or to start investing efficiently their money in some companies. As a result, people are more interested in occupying themselves with different activities and therefore they contribute productively to the society as they maximize their utility. Unfortunately, greed can sometimes get easily out of control and it becomes “infectious”. To begin with, some people that have gained a notable amount of money, they leave their work because they believe that their wealth is enough in order to continue a life without working but spending the gained money and in that point, the society loses one of its active parts as these people not only retire from their work but also they retire from society. Secondly, there are people who are very rich but they continue collecting money that they do not actually need. Greed in this example has no useful purpose except to continue getting more wealthy. Consequently, the amount that passes to their children is so huge that it cannot be managed...
