Welfare Reform Act

In 1996 the Welfare Reform Act was introduced. With this introduction it changed the ways that individuals who have received some type of assistance through the government, would then be eligible to receive this type of service. Another act that goes along with the Welfare Reform Act is the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, brought on great changes on how the government assistance would be done. There were some different changes that occurred when this act went into effect such as: In some states instead of getting assigned amount of money they would end up being paid in capped grants; a time limit was put into place on the length of time you could receive assistance; there are many different types of training such as vocational, services within the community, job training would also be required from some individuals if would like to continue to receive their services and benefits.

I find these types of changes to be a positive thing for everyone. I believe that with these types of changes it is helping those who have become dependent of assistance to look for further into helping themselves on their own. I know some people now and in the past who would rather receive benefits from the government then to go out there and look for other resources to help them help themselves. I believe that in the future the children of these people will repeat what they have grown up knowing about the system and the help that they give.

When you are enrolled in the system to receive benefits you may also be eligible for Medicaid. According to www.nhpf.org, (26-Feb. 1999), “States do still have the option to align the TANF and Medicaid rules, so they must reevaluate their eligibility systems and decide whether a individuals who were once automatically enrolled will continue to be automatically enrolled.
