Topic: In the United States, we do not need to plan for retirement. Social Security will cover our needs when we are retired.

I disagree with statement. However I am young and do not know much about retirement. I feel that social security is in serious trouble and may not be around when I retire

The cost of living makes Social Security nothing more than a supplement tool and not a way to accrue primary income. Without utilizing retirement tools like a 401(k) plan, a person will not be able to retire. Social Security is in danger of not being funded for future generations.Social security is not a safety net for those who do not plan for retirement.

The benefits for social security are meager, and cannot cover the cost of living in today’s world. (Simuel, 2010)”For example, essentials like mortgage, lights, gas, water, medical bills, cost of medicine. With the average monthly benefit amount for social security being the maximum of $534.00 and lower, regular everyday living expenses will not be covered. Social security does not even begin to cover the needs of our elderly and the disabled- people in the United States. (Hill, 2010)”On a daily basis, seniors are on a monthly budget and are hurting for money they are not even getting by. They are doing without many things so they can purchase pay medical bills and medicines”. They are going to food banks, so that they have some food to put on their table. In my home town we have what is called ‘meals on wheels’, they deliver food to seniors who are not able to purchase food. They deliver them for many reasons, but one reason is that seniors don not have enough money for transportation to go to the grocery store”. Therefore many of the retired elder are getting part time jobs work four to five hours a week just to make ends meet.
