Song Essay

Many songs we listen to today convey different types of messages. Some contains messages of love, while others send messages of fun, revenge, and hate. A song creates relationships with society because the artist shares a personal story about their lives to the listeners. In most cases, songs become famous not only because of the catchy tunes, but more often because the lyrics speak to the listeners. In the Alternative song, “The Reason,” by Hoobastank, the artist conveys the message of changing for someone you love.

“The Reason” is a song about how a person regrets his past actions towards someone he loves, and as a result, desires to change his ways. The artist feels guilty about his past actions because he mentions, “I’m sorry that I hurt you/ it’s something I must live with every day.” The artist’s heart is in grief because of the pain that he inflicted to another person. His relationship with the person is so deep that he can’t let go of the past and regrets his actions so much that he earnestly seeks to change. This song not only tells a touching story about the artist life, but also reaches out to a greater audience who can relate to his feeling.

Anyone who experience feeling of regret can understand artist’s feelings. It is evident that this song is written for someone he loves because the song mentions, “I’ve found a reason for me/ To change who I used to be”. Change is almost never an easy thing to do because of this one person that he loves, he is willing to change his ways. Many times change can be initiated when it is triggered by the regret of one’s actions, and is always driven by motivation, which in this case is his love for the other person. Change is not something that happens very easily and only things as powerful as love can cause change.
