Viruses, Worms and Trojans, Oh my!
Abstract
Viruses, Worms or Trojans ever wonder what the differences between these are, or how they invade your computer. What they actually do to your system? I will start this research paper with a brief history on these villains from one of the first viruses created, through the year 2000 when a vicious virus sprang into action and spread worldwide. In the following pages I will give you just what you are looking for, answers to these questions. I will proceed to tell you what each of these infections are and how your computer maybe invaded by them. I will explain what these creatures do to your system once there. Unfortunately, your system has a very high chance of contracting a virus, worm or trojan. I will give you a few suggestions on protecting your system from these terrible creations.
Viruses, Worms and Trojans, Oh my!
The year is 1986; two Pakistani owners of a computer store create the “Brain” virus and implant it on all floppy disk software they sell. (Day-MacLeod, 2008) This virus only infected the boot records of computer systems, not the hard drives. The “Brain” virus would inhabit unused space on the floppy disk so it could not be used and this way it would hide from detection. (Sorkin, 2009)1987 brought the “Lehigh” virus into play. Its creator is unknown, but it was discovered at Lehigh University. This virus was the first memory resident file infector. It attacked executable files, and then took control when that file was opened. (Sorkin, 2009) Meanwhile in Germany the first encrypted virus known as the “Cascade” virus was introduced in 1988. This virus was coded and could not be changed or removed. (Sorkin, 2009) The “VBS/Loveletter” aka “ILOVEYOU” virus reared its ugly head in 2000 and caused havoc around the world. This virus was spread thru email and made it around the world in one day. Inventors of this creation recognized that people will eagerly open an email that speaks of love....
