Benchmarking Resources Paper

The five basic strategies are used in workforce planning: (1) population-based estimating, (2) benchmarking, (3) needs-based assessment, (4) demand-based assessment, and (5) training-output estimating (Fried & Fottler, 2008). Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses, depending on the goal of the planning exercise and the context in which it will be applied (Fried & Fottler, 2008). These methods may be used separately or in combination, depending on the system at which the planning is targeted as well as the specific policy questions posed during planning (Fried & Fottler, 2008).

According to the American Society for Quality, ASQ (2008) the Benchmarking is the process of measuring products, services, and processes against those of organizations know to be leader in one or more aspects of their organization. Benchmarking provides the insights to help understand how to compare the organizations with similar organizations even if they have different customers (American Society for Quality [ASQ], n.d.).

According to Fried and Fottler (2008) for individual organizations, benchmarking with peer institutions may provide useful information on how to staff a hospital or clinic to achieve productivity. Moreover, according to Kay (2007) benchmarking helps the organizations to understand the strength and the weakness of the organization, allows the organization realize what levels of performance is really possible by looking at others, and how much improvement the organization can obtain (Kay, 2007). Kay (2007) adds the benchmarking help to satisfy the customers or patients needs for quality, cost product and service by establishing new standard and goals.
