Pregnancy and the work place
In the world of Maternity leave, this refers to a specific duration of time where a mother or father can take off from work due to child birth. If a father was in must require of time off for this exact reason it is considered to be paternity leave. Maternity/Paternity leave can be made up of many different benefits including holiday time, personal days, sick leave, personal days, etc. In these busy times of preparing for your baby to arrive, while maintaining a full-time job can be very stressful and may have you feeling overwhelmed with not much time to each day. Trying your best to dot all the “I’s” and crossing all the “t’s”, it is necessary to appropriately plan out your maternity/paternity leave with your company to ensure no financial surprises that can challenge yourself and family at the worst possible time, when you are trying to enjoy every moment of the birth of your child.
The Tennessee Maternity Leave Act (MTLA) and the Federal family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) mandate that certain companies grant their employees time off during pregnancy or to care for newborn babies. Companies are forbidden by law to discriminate against employees who choose to take advantage of the opportunities provided by these laws (Ruch, 2010). “Companies in Tennessee are forbidden from imposing career restrictions on maternity leave, and must not impose any negative consequences on employees regarding of how much maternity leave they take. Upon their return, employees must be returned to their original or an equivalent position and must be eligible for the same bonuses” (Ruch, Ehow, 2010).
