Career planning

• Please describe the research you have undertaken into the career of interest to you (do not exceed 15 lines)

I am interested in a career with investment banks, and I’ve undertaken the following researches:

1) I consulted a friend who’s currently working for a top-tier investment bank. He recommended “Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking” as an introduction book for a beginner. I searched this book and downloaded the e-version on the Internet. I got a main picture about what investment banking is when I finished reading it.

2) I viewed many investment banks’ official website for more details including company’s introduction, history, culture, business and recruitment information, graduate scheme especially.

3) I registered with some useful financial magazine or newspaper online including Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review etc, so I am able to read the relevant financial news online or receive newsletters regularly, and also learn some management knowledge.

• Please describe your short term (3 year) career goals (do not exceed 15 lines)

My short-term goal (3 years after graduation) is to join the graduate scheme of a top-tier investment bank in London and work as an analyst within its investment banking area.

I give myself two years in the graduate scheme to start from the bottom and develop the relevant skills, for example, learning to use the web to do research and working with Excel spreadsheets. Learned from some investment bankers’ experience, I am prepared to work really long hours for a couple of years, do every effort to get my job done on time, work closely with the group members such as associate and VP, and be totally supportive to their work.

Do a great job for the first two years within the firm is the very important step to get promoted. After gaining two years’ experience and becoming more familiar with investment banking field, I expect a promotion from an analyst to a...
