Pearls Rating System (Estidama) vs Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)
Environmental certification for buildings started in 1991 with the launch of BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) by British Research Establishment. These guidelines where prompted to provide expert advice on building environment sustainability facilities buildings and sports facility, focus on the environmental design and environmental assessment including life cycle and cost analysis. By implementing these systems organizations can aim to obtain a number of tangible commercial benefits regarding 1)Increase general industry awareness of sustainable event management 2)Gain competitive advantage: sponsors whom are sensitive to these issues are looking for demonstrated sustainability credentials 3) Process improvements: the sustainability management system embedded a culture of continual improvement within the organization. 4)Cost savings: reducing taxes and bills 5) Market access to new business: certification will attract more business opportunities. 6)Stakeholder confidence: attaining certification improves reputation with its stakeholders.
Environmental sustainability is specific and different to the region in which is building different standard was required. In 1998 LEED(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), a national non-profit membership body, with around 20,000 member organizations. It is Internationally recognized green building certification system that provides third-party verification for buildings or communities. On the other hand Estidama – which means ‘sustainability’ in Arabic- is a government initiative developed by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) the Pearl Rating System within Estidama that is a green rating system used to assess sustainable building development practices in Abu Dhabi.
