Assignment: Staff and Administration

The staff and administration have very different roles in a hospital. I am going to start with the staff first. Out of the entire staff I believe that the physicians and nurses are the most important of a hospital. According to our textbook, Physicians are the driving force in hospitals. They ask that certain procedures be done for the patient and that certain supplies or equipment be purchased (Raffell, 2002). Physicians are the only ones that are allowed to admit patients and the physician is the one that “calls the shots”. Now, the physician’s authority is circumscribed by a certain administrative accountability to the administrator. Physicians are part or the Active, Associate, or Courtesy Medical Staff.

Nurses, I believe, are probably the most important part of patient care. Nurses follow doctor’s orders, administer medications to patients, and form a bond with patients and family members of patients. Because I have two children that have special medical needs, I have spent a lot of time in hospitals and the nurses either made the stay easy and comfortable or they made it miserable. As a nurse you are required to have certain finesse about you. If you come across as cold and uncaring it makes it a miserable time during an already miserable situation. Nurses also have to work very closely to both the administration and the physicians so they have to maintain a level of professionalism that is good for the patients, physicians, and administration.

The most important administrator of a hospital is the President or the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Many hospital administrators have Master’s degrees or PHD’s. According to our textbook, the administrator is responsible for carrying out the strategic plan developed by the board and carries on the day-to-day operation of the facility. It is important for the administrator to align him- or herself with qualified personnel in finance, human resources...
