Whose Choice is it?

Part A

It is well known that our society is flooded with a deluge of advertisement that is quite subjective and manipulating, sometimes going beyond suggestive. This often leaves one feeling powerless and lacking the ability to make their own choices.

Part B

In recent years the intensity of advertisement has increased exponentially. It has been said that “Advertising degrades the people it appeals to; it deprives them of their will to choose,” According to C.P. Snow.

This is very sad but true and we have all seen advertisements that tell us “Be like Mike” or “Drink Coke” because “That is the Way It Should Be” even better yet “BMW, there is no substitute”. These claims are all very subjective and quite often are only appealing to one’s vanity. Within the marketplace is a very competitive environment and to get noticed advertisers quite often and aggressively do go to great extremes to get their point across. This has led to a mentality that uses the influence of celebrities and their status to sell their products. Often not much is mentioned about the quality of the products in question or the integrity or the sincerity of their producers but merely a plethora sensational hype. This has turned into wholesale brainwashing of the masses driving them in herds to the local mall to get their very own purse by Coach or the latest version sweats with a giant logo of Pink on the rear. It is apparent that this has become a major problem among many age groups, especially teens and even more importantly preteens who are very vulnerable to the influences of their peers and the status quo. Marketers target these young groups intensely because they know that parents are powerless when it comes to the wants and desires of their children.

It seems that accountability needs to be reintroduced in society today. As advertising companies have been allowed to run amuck they neglect to take into account the damage and chaos...
