Group Communication Video Cases

Good and open communication skills are vital for a team that embraces diversity. The team member that leads the group is responsible for implementing a good and open communication strategy (Lafasto & Larson, 2001).

In order for a diverse group to be successful in all of their assignments, open communication must be implemented in a courteous way. A good and open communication strategy can provide a diverse group with rules that can help with discussions and other issues regarding diversity (Wiki Books, 2006).

Three videos pertaining to “Working in Groups” were examined. The first video called “Helping Annie” was concerning a 17 year old student that suffered from depression and an eating disorder. A group of three people were involved in the case to find a way to help the patient.

This team had diverse ways of thinking and finding a solution to this issue. The group was not getting along and understanding each other because they did not have the proper training that would help them communicate with each other effectively and successfully. Conflicts in a group arise mostly when members do not get along with each other. All team members must have the ability to understand and work well with their fellow team members. A team that is looking forward to becoming successful in every project must embrace diversity (Wiki Books, 2006).

Listening was the key to solving this patient’s problem. This group had problems in this skill. This group spoke and argued more than they listened. They would speak and when other members were speaking. They would also interrupt each other a lot. In order for this group to find the best solution to this patient’s problem, they must try to quiet down and learn to listen to one another more effectively (Richmond and McCroskey, 2004).
