Simulation Questions

What were the ethical issues presented in the simulation?

In The Case Of Fair Warning, as the quality control manager, the ethical issue was whether I should warn consumers about the contaminant in the product and to provide information regarding such while maintaining the company’s core values.

In the Case of Stringent Standards, the ethical issue was whether or not the company should put a product on the foreign market that the company did not sell in the United States because of safety violations.

What decision-making steps did you take to ethically address these issues?

The first step I took that led to my decision to inform the consumers about the contaminated product was to identify the problem, and the ethical issues surrounding the problem. I gathered as much information as I could to base my decision on. My first thought was how to use my core values that allow me to maintain the company’s core values. I thought about all possible consequences and all the stakeholders, which my decision would affect. I also considered what would make each stakeholder happy and what would be the greater good for all concerned. I realized that if I made a bad decision it could be detrimental to the company.

What ethical perspectives, or lenses, did you use to make your decisions in the simulation?

The ethical lens that I used in the first case was rights/responsibilities. I focused on the rights of all the stakeholders and the responsibility that the company had to enforce those rights. This allowed me to consider the outcome of my decision. If I were not aware of the responsibility that the company has toward the consumers, the decision would have cost the company to lose money.
