Some basic guidelines I can follow as a paraprofessional when assisting my students in their spelling skills is to first prepare students for spelling test. I can prepare students by helping study for spelling test. When studying I will teach students a studying strategy (look-say-see-write-check) to understand and remember what they studied. Motivation will be another guideline I use to assist in spelling skills. I will play spelling games such as, matching, flashcards, and board games. After the students have mastered spelling, I will teach them to write sentences from the spelling words they have learned. I will also have students working in groups to assist in studying spelling words, because two heads are better than one and they will learn having the help from others such as their peers.

Two effective strategies for spelling development are getting students to quiz one another, and recycling words. Getting the students to quiz one another saves you time and strengthen skills. While students work together this could be a great time to observe students. Observing will let you know who needs more help with spelling. Another effective strategy for spelling development is recycling the words students misspell. When students recycle misspelled words, they will learn them because they have to go back over them. The students will then learn to enjoy spelling words, and become better readers. I will defiantly use recycling as a strategy to build consciousness in my students.

Spelling new words came easy for me because I would practice. I would use the strategy look-say-see-write-check. I always did this when studying for a test. Now I believe big words that I do not know the meaning of are often hard for me to pronounce. Sometimes I am corrected when reading out loud, but it does not bother me because I want to know the correct way of saying a difficult word.
