JOHN MOSCA PHYSIOLOGY OF EXERCISE LABS 8, 9, 12

Introduction:

This lab looked at the combination of muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, anaerobic power, and VO2 max. All of these were measured in this lab on a subject through a variety of physically demanding tests. They are also different components of physical fitness in an individual, so it was vital to measure them in order to evaluate the subject. These tests included weightlifting, walking, and running, stretching, and calisthenics. The lab was not conducted in one day, it occurred over a course of three days. On the first day, the muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility tests were done. The second day was composed of the anaerobic power tests. The third day was the VO2 max test.

Methods:

The subject participating in these trials was a male. His weight was found to be at 70 kg., his height at 167 cm. The equipment used in the muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility tests was a hand-grip dynamometer, bench press (with free weights and bar), knee extension machine, sit-up and push-up mat, and a sit-and-reach

yard stick. Equipment for the anaerobic power tests included a measuring stick, a treadmill, and a stationary bike. Time was also kept for the treadmill and bike. In the VO2max. test, a track was used for the walking and running, and a watch to keep time. On the first day, the subject participated in trials in the gym with different equipment. Isometric strength was measured with dynamometer, by gripping with one hand a t a time. Dynamic strength was measured on a bench press. The subject first did a few warm-up sets, then did a one repetition max. on the bench press. Later on, the subject bench-pressed 50% of the bench press one repitition max. weight for as many repetitions as possible. Knee extension and flexion were measured on weight machine. Flexibility was measured by a yardstick, by having the...
