Chapter 1, Minicase #1 through #4 (p. 35 - 37).
1. I would inform Barbara that things aren’t always as easy as she may think. Her concept my seem easy, but to implement her idea may take much more work then what she knows. Her idea, which may be a good one, was not thoroughly researched and all benefits and disadvantages were not explored. I would explain that she did not include her IS department, her assisstant, or the owner’s of the WAMAP in the process of the systems development life cycle. If she gets buy in from the owners she can use that as influence to help push her idea. Also, her assisstant who may be a big user of this system which she may have much more insight into what might make it more user friendly. And, her decision to keep the IS guys out will reduce the trust they have for the new database and their knowledge could have prevented many of the flaws that she is experiencing. They were hired for a reason and if you bypass them, then you are basically saying they are not important in your eyes. When the IS guys pushed this SDLC methodology, they were trying to give her idea the best chance of success. They knew that analysis of system over the stages of the developement life cycle are important and can help prevent mass amounts of wasted time if initial feasibility studies prove that the system is not a good idea.
