Introduction

Commonly known as “Water on the brain”, this is the easy and short definition of Hydrocephalus. A more medical definition according to ‘National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is “it is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain”.

A common misunderstanding is that the term means water on the brain, while the truth is, this ‘water’ is in fact CSF or cerebrospinal fluid which is a transparent fluid located around the brain and spinal cord. The accumulation of this fluid causes an abnormal widening of space that occurs in the head which is harmful because it may cause pressure on the tissues of the brain.

According to ‘Medline plus’, a source for trusted medical information, hydrocephalus may start either when the baby is still in the womb, which takes the form of a birth defect where there is a case of incomplete closure of the spinal column. It could also occur with young children and not just babies.
