Treating the Pain by Ending a Life

This essay had me thinking. I have always been for this cause, but this doctor put a new perspective on this issue for me. I used to think people should be able to ask for a lethal injection if they found out they were going to die, but he opened my eyes to something else. He does not think the patient should be able to ask for this injection because he finds out he has cancer. He wants the patient to be able to live his life until pain is all that is left. I always looked at it that if I was told I had terminal cancer I would ask for it. But he is right. I should be doing what I can while I can to spend time with friends and family until the time comes when I can no longer do so. I should be trying to prolong whatever life I have, and make the most of it, before just giving up. Although I do not agree that a patient’s wishes are irrelevant when it comes to making his decision. Maybe the patient did not want him to perform his mercy overdose. She did not ask for it. He just assumed that is what she wanted. I do not think that he is right in that aspect. Everything else he said I am in agreement with. But if the patient did not ask him to help her, he should not have taken it upon himself to give her the overdose.
