Chapter 1

Gladwell titles this chapter, “How a little bit of knowledge goes a long way.” He expresses throughout this chapter about thin slicing, and how through the use of thin slicing we can tell a lot about a person in an extremely short amount of time. Thin slicing requires very little knowledge because you don’t even realize you’re doing it. It unconsciously happens when you are first introduced to something or someone new. The very first thoughts, actions, facial expressions, everything all happens in the blink of an eye.

Thin slicing is used in marketing research daily. Marketing relies on the buyers first impressions of a product. They use thin slicing to determine what is most attractive to the consumer, such as what colors are more enticing to the consumer and they try to mimic these findings to make top profit for their product. Gladwell refers to Gosling who says, through thin- slicing, if you were to just go through someone’s dorm room without ever meeting them you will get a pretty good idea of what kind of person or what type of personality that person encompasses. Marketing works in the same way. Through looking at the consumers likes, and taste in certain products they can make that product more marketable for those people.

Through using thin slicing it makes marketing of a particular product much easier. If Gottman can decode someone’s entire relationship from just viewing the couples facial and body expressions, you better believe marketers and market researchers will use that inside advantage. If they can predict what the consumer likes and wants unconsciously they can promote and display their product to the right consumer.
