Assignment: Communication for Marginalized Populations

Question 1: As a Medical Assistant, you worked with three different marginalized populations. Briefly describe each population?

In the first scenario, Mrs. Elson could not hear very well and she was a little embarrassed that the medical assistant was going to tell her that she overweight. As a Medical student you should always try to keep the patients comfortable and relaxed, especially if they are already experiencing problems with their blood pressure. But we should always allow the doctor to be the one to tell the patient what kind of problems is going on.

In the second scenario, the grandmother had a hard time understanding what the doctor had said, because the doctor was in a rush. As a medical assistant it is good to ask the patient did they understand what the doctor had said, If not the caregiver should ask if they need more time with the doctor for him to explain it much better.

The third scenario, Ramona do not speak English very well, so she had her ten year old daughter to help her interpret if needed, so the doctor could understand her. As a medical assistant you may have to make sure the patient does understand the doctor and the treatment, this is very important. Which was is a good idea to have someone with you that does understand English a little better and that can make sure that we understand what the doctor is telling us.

Question 2: What would you say is the overall lesson from the simulation activity?

That everyone needs medical treatment weather they are young or old, speaking English well or cannot speak English at all; they should be formed of hospitals and medical procedures. If the patient is not medically knowledge it is up to you as a medical assistant to find a way of getting on their level so that they can understand the procedures as well as their illness or injury, if that patient does not fully understand what is going on this could cause some serious problems...
