Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Solutions to Help Our Youth Succeed

Colorado is great state, full great people. There is an abundance of activities for individuals of all ages to participate in and enjoy. From the Rocky Mountains to the eastern plains Colorado is a destination spot for many travelers. In the heart of Colorado is our wonderful city of Denver, where natives go to support our sports teams, enjoy music, catch a play, appreciate fine art, have fun at a night club or popular bar and so much more. But Denver is not just about fun and games for adults. Giving the youth of Denver a proper education and the chance to succeed in this world is one of the most important aspects of the city. However, there are some issues that can jeopardize a young student’s opportunity to do well. Some of these things are out of the control of city. But one of the major issues that the city could do something about is the number of cases of teenagers getting pregnant before they graduate from high school.

The students in the Denver Public School districts are given the chance to receive an adequate education. The problem is too many of these students wind up dropping out before they have the chance to finish. The reason the majority of teenage age girls drop out of high school is because of pregnancy (Mangel, Linda). The rate of teenage pregnancies in the Denver Public School district is an issue that cannot be ignored. In 2007 the rate of teen births in Denver was twice the state average at 24.3 births per 1,000 girls ages 15-17 (“Denver May” 9). That means some of those girls had a baby before they were even legally allowed to drive. Teenage girls do not have a well enough understanding of what goes into taking care of a baby and how it can affect their future. It is only after the baby is born do they truly see how time consuming and stressful it is not only on them, but on the people around them as well.
