Generational Differences, Culture and Technology

Introduction

Melissa Ethridge said it best when she said, “The only thing that stays the same is change.” As a society we always find a way to change and improve, and in no, way, shape, or form does something stay the same if it needs to be improved. The same goes for organizations in today’s society. With the economy in its current shape, organizations are trying to find any possible way to implement change to stay successful. In order for an organization to be competitive in today’s economy, it must be willing to evaluate its policies, procedures, and practices, and decide what can be changed in order to improve the organization. The change may be something little such as, cutting back a position that is not needed, or a huge change such as, re-structuring the organization entirely.

Throughout the workforce there are many different reasons as to why an organization needs to implement change. It is especially crucial for an organization to decide what the problem is, how to change that problem, and how to implement the change into the organization. As noted in “Organizational Development and Change”, it is very important that everybody within the organization understands the change that is being implemented and is committed to making that change (Cummings & Worley, 2009). Although there are multiple reasons for implementing change, this paper discusses in more detail generational differences, globalization, and technology being the three main reasons for organizational development and the need to implement change. Within each category, it will discuss how another organization has implemented change and improved their organization due to generational differences, globalization, and technology.
