Name at least 3 aspects that contribute to communication through visual means. Give examples

The first aspect of visual communication would be dots. Dots can be used to indicate lines and thus shapes, pg.73. Dots can be used to create any shape we want such as what we all call television. When you watch television you are actually looking at dots or pixels. The lines are considered virtual and are not real but they seem real in a visual sense. When you walk down the street your eyes are being stimulated every minute. A dot is the most basic element of visual communication. As you look at signs or any visual picture you are looking at dots, everything begins with dots.

The second aspect of visual communication is lines. We use lines to create our basic shapes. A line is created by many different things or objects. The line divides, measures, and binds; a straight line is infinite, and may symbolize the path to a man s destiny. When the line is horizontal, it reflects the temporal world, and when vertical it reflects the spiritual real. A sinusoidal line reflects motion, as in the movement of oceanic waves and a straight line reflects an undeviating line of conduct. A line also has many different meanings in the world of art. A vertical line creates a sense of strength and balance. A thick line makes the work appear aggressive while a thin line is read as fragile and delicate. The curvy lines create the feeling of harmony and gracefulness and the zigzag lines are energetic and dramatic. I never knew lines were so expressive. While sit here and type I see lines on my keyboard, the computer, and my computer desk. I never sat back and looked at them in that way before.

The third aspect of visual communication is symbols. Symbols are everywhere we look and are used for us to be safe. The use of a stop sign, speed limit sign and stop lights are symbols of safety to us. We have all been taught that those symbols are used for safety. Our whole world relies on...
