Advancements in Medical Robotics

Throughout the years, medical robotics have become increasingly more common in our society. This is not a result of doctors not doing a sufficient enough job, but the fact that these robotic instruments can make difficult procedures much less stressful. These instruments allow doctors to be more precise and efficient during surgery as well as understanding the root of the problem. Recent key advancements have been the invention of the Pillcam, the daVinci, and the ZEUS surgical systems. Theses advancements have come in the last ten years and this progress will only continue to flourish.

Background History of Medical Robotics

Medical robotics can be dated back to around the 1980’s when they were investigated in the fields of orthopedics and neurosurgery. In the late 80’s it was introduced in the field of urology with the implementation of a robotic arm called the PUMA 560. It was only used for very limited clinical work on humans and its services were discontinued due to poor ultrasound imaging capabilities of the prostate. Urologists continued using robotics by creating a renal access robotic system that became comparable or even better than the standard method for renal access.
