Abstract

Professional Values and Ethics should align with the values of all individuals aspiring to achieve career success. Defining the individuals Personal and Professional Values is important in deciding if the organization identifies with the same goals and values as the individual. The organizations’ values and goals should be similiar to those of the individual and should merge together in-order to work successfully.

The word Ethic, is a philosophical word, defined in the Britannica Online Academic Edition as:

“a branch of philosophy that seeks to determine the correct application of moral notions such as good and bad and right and wrong or a theory of the application or nature of such notions doing what is right or wrong in a particular set of circustances and are the moral and ethical attributes of character.("Ethics (philosophy)," 2011).”

An individual’s values reflect what he or she values highly and helps to guide his or her goals. These values will not always be parallel to values set up by a certain organization, but should reflect a positive viewpoint of the individual. The ethical standards of an organization will have a significant effect on the individuals behavior. The organizations values should be the basis for the behavior of all individuals at the organization. The organizations’ ethical standards maybe not be the same as each individual’s and could affect career success. According to the sociologist Raymond Baumhart in a study he conducted in a selected few business people, he asked: what does ethics mean to you? Most answers were

"Ethics has to do with what my feelings tell me is right or wrong."

"Ethics has to do with my religious beliefs."

"Being ethical is doing what the law requires."

"Ethics consists of the standards of behavior our society accepts."
