Guidelines for Dealing with Academic Misconduct within the Faculty of Education According to the definition used by the University of Tasmania, Academic Misconduct includes cheating, plagiarism and any other conduct by which a student: a) seeks to gain, for themselves or for any other person, any academic advantage or advancement to which they or that of that other person are not entitled, or b) improperly disadvantages any other student. The University provides detailed procedural guidelines that must be followed by Schools if there is an allegation of academic misconduct. These procedures are documented in Part 3: Academic Misconduct in Ordinance 9: Student Discipline which can be accessed at: http://www.utas.edu.au/universitycouncil/legislation/ord9.doc. Staff within the Faculty of Education are required to comply with these procedural guidelines. The Faculty of Education recognises cheating, collusion and plagiarism as actions that are defined as Academic Misconduct. Definitions and examples of each of these are included in Appendix A.

Responsibilities of Academic and / or Teaching Staff within the Faculty of Education

It is the responsibility of all academic and / or teaching staff within the Faculty to educate, monitor and commence the prosecution of students in regard to Academic Misconduct.

1. The Educative Role

All academic and / or teaching staff should: • Educate students to understand what is meant by cheating, collusion and plagiarism and to realise that each of these conducts is considered to be Academic Misconduct that is punishable by a range of penalties as outlined in Ordinance 9. Embed learning experiences within the units of study aimed at teaching students about the importance of academic integrity and which develop their knowledge and skills in information literacy so that they might avoid plagiarism.
