1. What are the different forms of social media that exist today? Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes.

Some of the different forms of social media that exist in the present day include, Blogging (such as Blogger.com, Wordpress.com, and Xanga.com) used for expressing opinions, Social Networking (such as Myspace and Facebook) used for communication on several different levels and expressing opinion, Microblogging (such as Twitter and Foursquare) used for short burst of information updated frequently, Video Sharing (such as Youtube, and Metacafe) used for visually expressing one's self, Photo Sharing (such as Flickr and Deviant Art) used for displaying one's artwork to the general populaion, and Forums (such as yahoo, google, Axia classrooms, and windows live forums) used for relaying information, expressing opinions, and holding general discussions.

2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society?

The greatest benefits of social media on our society is the ability to instantly communicate with large groups of people in a variety of ways. Weather it be via updating ones Facebook wall to tell all of your friends what you did today, posting on twitter for the same reason, or posting a video on Youtube for any variety of reasons. This form of instant communication saves the average person time in disseminating their information to the masses. For larger companies who are jumping on the social media bandwagon the effect is the same, they can inform large groups of people about their products instantly and receive feedback at the same speed.
