Modernization and Indigenous Cultures Page 1

Introduction

When dealing with the sociological issue of modernization and indigenous cultures, we must first break this sociological issue down into the two main parts which are social problem and social group. This will allow us to better define each issue and provide detailed information for each that will generate a better understanding for us. In this case, modernization is the social problem and Indigenous Cultures is the social group.

Modernization

Modernization is a means of evolutionary transition from a rural or traditional society to an advanced modern society. This means an improvement over the current conditions in society. Modernization is a way to introduce new ideas or new technology into society. Modernization is also an improvement over the current situation in a society by means of living conditions, food resources, and clothing. There is always going to be a need to have the latest clothing to keep in style. There is also going to be needs in which we gather food and live our life style. When a society becomes outdated or that society is not as advanced as other societies around them, that society will have the need to modernize again to stay current and up to date with the latest and greatest conditions of that neighboring society, thus causing a repetitive motion from other societies around them. It is like a domino effect, when one society gets better, the other societies around it will want to become better too. There are some societies in the world that do not modernize, or don’t modernize as often as other societies do and this will cause this particular society to fall behind in some of the technology and trends.
