Human Resource Development – Role of HRD Practitioner
Human Resource Development (HRD) is an essential function of an organization, as it manages its organizations greatest and valuable asset, its workers. It is a significant role in building strong relationships between employees and organizations. Previously, HRD was not considered as an important aspect of success for organizations. However today there has been greater recognition of its critical functions. In this essay, I will be discussing the roles of HRD practitioners and how their expectations have changed dramatically over the years. I will further discuss the expectations of senior management of the HRD personnel and how HRD practitioners contribute to the success of organizations.
HRD is continuously is changing and has been defined overtime as a result of its recognition. According to Watkins, HRD is the study and practice responsible for the fostering of a long term work related learning capacity at the individual, group and organizational level (Watkins 1989). Watkins here emphasizes that HRD is based on the learning and development of employee’s skills in order for them to perform their job to the organizations standards. Overtime Gourlay stated that HRD focuses on theory & practice related to training, development and learning within organizations, both for individuals and in the context of business strategy and organizational competence formation (Gourlay 2000). Gourlay focuses more on strategy within organizations and concentrates more on the capabilities of the employees. Through recognition of the skills that the employees comprise of, organizations could therefore achieve greater success. HRD has moved to take a greater focus on organizational learning. The constant changing environments of organizations are resulting in new roles emerging within the practice of HRD (Sofo 1999).
